Women's Cinema, Forgotten Heroines of the Movie Theaters

Cinema history from a female perspective: The documentary brings Austria's overlooked female cinema pioneers back into the spotlight. Since 1900, women ventured into the cinema adventure, ran mobile theaters, and handled highly dangerous nitrate film. Half of Vienna once lay in their hands before many were expropriated by the National Socialists. After 1945, they rebuilt the cinema. Using archival material and dramatic reenactments, female cinema pioneers from various backgrounds are portrayed. The narrative spans all the way to the present: To this day, it is women who run Austria's established art-house cinemas. Using the example of filmmaker Käthe Kratz, the documentary shows how long it took for women to leave their mark on all levels of filmmaking.

The Mann Construction Site

Traditional role models are faltering while new expectations emerge. Between the provider role and fatherhood, between strength and vulnerability, men are searching for their identity. Experts in psychology and gender studies are analyzing these changes. Young men do not really talk about this in everyday life. In the film, they speak of contradictory demands: Should they show emotions or suppress them? Social media, which spreads toxic ideals of masculinity, is also examined. Grönemeyer's question is more relevant than ever.

Fabulous Animal Friends – The Pig

Pigs are among the most underappreciated animals of our time: highly intelligent, socially complex, and emotionally sensitive, they are often reduced to their role as farm animals. Research paints a different picture: Pigs can play video games, recognize themselves in a mirror, and form complex social relationships. Their abilities are comparable to those of dogs and primates. Scientists have demonstrated that pigs think abstractly, have a sense of time, and show empathy. At the same time, the film is a journey through the cultural history of the pig: The pig appears in nearly all major civilizations—as a sacred animal, a symbol of fertility, a sacrificial offering, and a scapegoat.

Fabulous Fellow Creatures – The Raven

Ravens have fascinated humanity throughout history, and many myths surround these elegant black birds. All corvids are considered highly intelligent, but they are also viewed as harbingers of death. In Norse mythology, Munin and Hugin are Odin’s companions; in ancient Greece and Rome, ravens were considered oracular birds. In Egypt, the raven was seen as a symbol of fidelity because raven pairs stay together for life. The raven plays a significant role in art history, from Edgar Allan Poe’s „The Raven“—featuring the most famous raven quote in literature, „Nevermore“—to Hitchcock’s „The Birds.“ This marks the start of a new series on animals and humans.

Fabulous Fellow Creatures – The Wolf

Hardly any animal polarizes opinion as much as the wolf: for some, a symbol of untamed wilderness; for others, a threat and the embodiment of evil. For centuries, it was mercilessly hunted in Europe and nearly exterminated. In fairy tales, it appears as a dangerous predator. But the reality is more nuanced. Organized into packs with complex social structures, the wolf displays intelligence and adaptability. Its return calls for a new way of coexisting with wild animals in Europe. The film traces the cultural history of the wolf—from fairy-tale monster to mythical ancestor—and follows its journey through myth, religion, literature, and pop culture, from the myth of Romulus to Little Red Riding Hood to Michael Jackson’s „Thriller.“ The most famous line comes from the Brothers Grimm: „But Grandma, what a terribly big mouth you have!“

I shop, therefore I am—Can there be such a thing as responsible consumption?

Globalized supply chains, the throwaway society, fast fashion, overconsumption: familiar buzzwords, but what can we do as consumers? This documentary offers insights into the machinery of consumerism. Behavioral biologist Gregor Fauma compares the pursuit of goods to a primal instinct; Dr. Roland Mader explains consumer addiction; and debt counselors highlight the pitfalls of online and installment payments. Activist Nunu Kaller criticizes fast fashion, while economist Niko Paech calls for a post-growth economy.

Art as Medicine

Art is increasingly recognized as a resource for health. Opera singers Bea Robein and Jennifer Davison have been leading workshops for the past five years that focus on breathing, singing, and empowerment. This approach is scientifically supported by Professor Matthew Pelowski’s ARTIS project (University of Vienna), which demonstrates positive effects on stress and anxiety. From dance programs to combat dementia to workplace wellness days, the examples are diverse. Austria is debating „art covered by health insurance.“.

Maria Theresa – Monarch and Musical Heroine

Empress Maria Theresa of the Habsburg dynasty takes the stage: This documentary follows the making of „Maria Theresa, The Musical“ by the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, from rehearsals to the world premiere. The team led by Artistic Director Christian Struppeck presents a historically accurate and contemporary portrayal of the monarch, with expert consultation from Habsburg specialist Katrin Unterreiner. Music by the Falk brothers, directed by Alex Balga, with Nienke Latten in the title role. The documentary was produced by Heidi Neuburger-Dumančić.

A feast for the ears, literature for everyone

The Ohrenschmaus Literary Prize is unique in Austria: it gives a voice to authors who have learning difficulties. From the creation of the texts through writing workshops to the award ceremony, an inclusive competition unfolds. The documentary follows the participants on their journey, highlighting their motivation and the creation of their texts. Jury members explain the significance of the prize. Inclusion leads to a diversity of texts featuring authentic, moving perspectives.

Otto Kallir – Pioneer of Viennese Modernism

„Save what could be saved.“ This principle guided Otto Kallir’s work as a collector, publisher, and gallery owner. In 1923, Otto Nirenstein, who was born in Vienna, founded the Neue Galerie on Grünangergasse. In his exhibitions, he showcased works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. He discovered Richard Gerstl and helped bring him posthumous fame. After the Nazis came to power, Kallir fled to New York in 1939 and opened the Galerie Saint Etienne. Through networking and donations, he brought Austrian modernism to international attention. His legacy led to the Art Restitution Act of 1998.

ROCK ME AMADEUS – Falco backstage

Twenty-five years after the death of Hans Hölzel, also known as Falco, „Rock Me Amadeus,“ the new in-house musical production by the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, celebrated its world premiere on October 7, 2023. Author Christian Struppeck, in collaboration with the Falco Private Foundation, developed a psychological portrait of an exceptional artist—not a karaoke show, but a search for the person behind the stage persona. Director Heidi Neuburger-Dumančić chronicles the production’s development from casting to premiere, interwoven with numerous archival recordings.

Waldesruh / Vienna Funeral Directorate

The Waldesruh Forest Cemetery is a joint project of Bestattung Wien and the City of Vienna’s Forestry and Agriculture Department. The site is located in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve in Breitenfurt and offers urn burials surrounded by unspoiled nature. People can choose between a meadow plot, a communal tree, or a family tree. Bestattung Wien sensitively guides bereaved family members through every step of the process, from the pickup of the deceased to the memorial service and the burial in the forest.

She Challenge – Women in Sports

Women in sports are still fighting for equality, visibility, and recognition in a world dominated by male-led structures. Unequal pay is just one obstacle: While top male athletes earn millions, many female athletes have to work side jobs. The media focuses on men’s competitions, while women’s sports often remain invisible. Despite adversity, female athletes achieve peak performance and break down societal barriers. They are fighting for a future beyond gender. The documentary’s protagonist is Victoria Olivier.
