Europa

by Marko Dumančić

At the beginning of 2024, a brand new “Europa” by Marko Dumančić was released. An album with 11 tracks for archlute and guitar

Harmony and counterpoint, groove and accentuation, sophistication and catchiness
– With his solo album “Europa”, Marko Dumančić succeeds in uniting all these elements and capturing and beguiling listeners into his very own world of sound. His instruments are the flamenco guitar and the archiliuto, each of which he has developed in his own personal way of playing.

Their very own musical style and tone that Marko Dumančić has established here unites all the numbers: melodic, powerful, lively, rhythmically complex, exciting and yet easy to listen to.

In 11 songs, Marko Dumančić roams through musical worlds - with the flamenco guitar he explores the Bosnian, deeply sad song form Sevdah and brings it together with the Siguiriya, one of the oldest forms of flamenco.

By combining sevdah and the Arabic-style melodies of siguiriya, Marko Dumančić integrates styles and genres that developed in parallel and perhaps have more in common than is obvious at first glance. In the number “lagrimas de toro”, he refers to the tradition of bullfighting in Spain.

The Electric Shoes trilogy poses the question of protagonist and antagonist and how two opposing forces can nevertheless keep the world in balance. These pieces are characterized by tension and suspense, tempo and dynamics, making them unexpectedly danceable.

About the musician

Marko Dumančić

Born in 1968 in Zagreb, Croatia, he attended music school and learnt classical guitar from an early age. In Vienna, he studied classical guitar at the Vienna Conservatory and at the University of Performing Arts.

After completing his studies, he wanted to go beyond the boundaries of the classical interpretation of songs and pieces. He looked for new ways to express his musical ideas. His interest in flamenco and ancient or Renaissance music was an important source of inspiration. By combining the principles of counterpoint with the chord structures of flamenco, he developed his own musical language on the flamenco guitar and the archiliuto.
